You arrive home with a car full of groceries. Getting distracted by the kids and the dog, you completely forget to shut the garage door. As you crawl into bed, you get a call from your neighbor reminding you that your garage door is open. They could have just saved you and your family a lot of time, hassle, and pain.
As most Americans use the garage door as a primary means to home entry, this is a prime target for unwanted guests.
Published reports show that 40% of home break-ins and robberies happen when people leave their garage door open. Police say it doesn’t matter what you have in your garage, an open garage door is enough to tell a thief to come into your home.
Tulsa Midtown Alert Neighbor Captains Kathryn Lyons and Jeanine Kinney are hitting the pavement reminding neighbors to safe. “The key to a lot of alert neighbors success is closing the window of opportunity for criminals,” said Kinney.
Mr. Meyers left his garage door open.
He didn’t realize how easy it was for a thief until FOX23’s Crime Reporter Abbie Alford showed him while he was in the backyard tending to his garden a thief could walk into his garage and steal his historic books and Mr. Meyers wouldn’t know.
Stealing something from a garage is considered a larceny but if the thief has to break something to gain entry that’s a burglary.
It’s also important to remember that a majority of home break-ins occur during the day.
Weekly crime bulletins show in the Tulsa Police Riverside Division there were 18 residential break-ins in that last week. Three occurred at night.
The good news in all of this is that garage door companies, like Bilt Rite, offer several safety precautions for garage doors. One thing that Bilt Rite offers are garage door openers that close the garage door automatically after a selected period of time. With the recent rise of home burglaries, it is worth looking into devices that may keep you and your family safer.
Bilt Rite is happy to help you find the right security devices to make you feel safe.
